We highly encourage our students to apply to any and all scholarships they qualify for to reduce the cost of attendance:

The Center for Social Science Scholarship and The Hilltop Institute support graduate students through internally and externally funded grants and research projects.
William Averette Anderson Fund (PhD Doctorate Students)
The 2024 Application period for Bill Anderson Fund fellows is now open!
The William Averette Anderson Fund—fondly referred to as the Bill Anderson Fund, or the BAF—is a vibrant nonprofit organization whose mission is to expand the number of underrepresented minority professionals in hazards and disaster research and practice. The BAF is helping to transform the disaster workforce by empowering the diverse next generation of leaders to address the disproportionate burden of environmental hazards among communities of color and other socially marginalized groups.
We are seeking underrepresented minority doctoral students whose research aims to address the disproportionate burdens of environmental hazards and disasters among marginalized communities. We welcome students from all disciplines, including engineering, the social sciences, emergency management, public health, and more. Bill Anderson Fund Fellows receive professional development training, networking opportunities, mentorship, and access to hands-on research experiences.

Graduate Assistantships
Graduate research assistant (RA) or teaching assistant (TA) positions opportunities do arise across the university and within our department for students, but they can be difficult to arrange in advance of arrival. Graduate assistant positions can be searched at https://careers.umbc.edu/handshake/ once you have accepted an offer of education to UMBC.

Co-op and Work Study
UMBC also offers graduate student support through co-op programs, work study, and other arrangements. U.S. applicants should complete a FASFA form when they apply to graduate school.
Students planning to study full time should consult the UMBC Office of Financial Aid for details about the variety of other scholarships, grants, and loans available. Government agencies and other organizations may also provide support to their employees for graduate education. Employees should check with their human resources department.
Alumni Tuition Scholarships
$1000 Alumni Tuition Scholarships and application fee waivers ($50) are available for UMBC alumni who enroll in masters or certificate programs for spring 2019 or fall 2019. Complete information will be available about on the Graduate School website
